We took our rescue pup,
Holly, to training with Patricia.
She is amazing! I was a bit
nervous to take Holly to our
first session but she did so
well. Patricia is an excellent
trainer and the difference in
Holly’s behaviour is night and
day… Erica Charles

Training People and Their Dogs•The real key to dog training is showing not telling. That’s hard for people to get their head around but once they do, they see much faster results•Communication should be through body language primarily•A tired dog is a good dog. No amount of training will make up for a lack of exercise. Dog’s need it for both physical and mental health•The shorter the leash, the more they pull, so give them their six feet. •The first, most important skill to teach your dog is not to sit or come back but to pay attention to you. All else flows from that one essential skill•Once they learn it they need to earn it. Don’t reward for lack of effort on your dog’s part. Everyone needs a goal to work effecively. So do dogs. Keep training rewards for just that so the dog looks forward to their time with you. Let’s just call it structured play•You can mix play time with training time. A few minutes of tug or fetch, ask for a sit or a down before you throw again, or a spin, or a shake a paw. It’s teaching the dog that you can be fun too. Fun builds engagement•There are some things that can’t be taught. In those situations you have to chang their environment, to alter their behaviour•Shy dogs are less intimated if you approach them with your back turned•Adolescence in dogs is a real thing. They go through the same kind of hormonal upheaval as we do. It when aggression rears it’s head, if it’s going to, such as reactivity on a leash•If a dog is not performing it’s not because they are stubborn,it’s usually because they don’t understand what you’re asking . You need to find a different way to convey your request
